An important challenge of public precaution is the protection of the population from the harmfull effects of ionising radiation. To meet the demands, it is important to maintain expertise or to recapture lost competence in science and in practical applications in companies, hospitals and public authorities. For this reason, the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research in close coordination with the federal state Baden-Württemberg has decided to found a new Institute for Radiation Research at the Research Centre Karlsruhe in close connection to the Karlsruhe Scientific University,. At January 1st, the former department “Kompetenzerhalt im Strahlenschutz (HS-KES)“ of the Central Safety department (HS) was transferred to the new institute.
